HORIZONS Seminars

The HORIZONS Seminar Series welcomes guest speakers from across the national and international medical community to the Griffith University Centre for Medicine and Oral Health. Speakers are invited to share first hand experiences from their careers in the health industry. These presentations are aimed at first and second year medicine students, but are open to all H4H members and the wider public.

Previous seminar topics have ranged from practicing medicine in the slums of Calcutta to the medical response by the Australian Defence Force in the wake of the Boxing Day Tsunami. The seminars aim to provide H4H members with new and varied perspectives of medicine and health care, possible career options and highlight experiences that are available outside the standard curriculum.   The Next HOPE4HEALTH Horizon’s Seminar will be on

Previous Horizon’s Seminars in 2008  

-Tuesday 21st October 2008 12pm – 1pm Bill Bye and Paul Hamilton, Winners of the Inaugural HOPE4HEALTH Developing Communities Grant will give a presentation on their recent electives experience in Papua New Guinea.  

-Wednesday September 24th 2008 Bruce Simpson, the CEO of Barambah Regional Medical Service in Cherbourg Bruce spoke about the importance of cultural awareness and issues faces Indigenous communities in 2008  

-Tuesday September 2nd 2008 Dr Gary Rogers- Building Capacity for HIV care in the Pacific Dr Rogers spent two years based in Nouméa, working in the small island countries and territories of the Pacific building the capacity of health care providers to provide comprehensive care for people living with HIV.  He spoke about the issues facing individuals in Pacific Island Nations with HIV / AIDS and the role he played in getting them treated and limiting the spread of Disease.

-Tuesday July 29th 2008 Dr Helen Longbottom, Médecins Sans Frontières In 2004, Dr Helen Longbottom, a GP and Public Health Physician from Brisbane, spent six months as a MSF Volunteer on an HIV Treatment program in Kenya.    

-Tuesday June 17th 2008 Dr Peter Sharwood, Australian Defence Force. The history of Medicine and the role that war played in developing surgical and medical treatments.  

-Tuesday March 25th 2008 Dr Chris Perry: Health in Ghana Development of the Dabaa Medical Centre – Construction Begins! How $65,000 turned into Millions for the people of Ghana!  

-Friday February 15th 2008 Dr Gerry Costello, Royal Flying Doctor Service The history and issues facing the RFDS today.
