Cherbourg is an Indigenous community situated in the South Burnett region of Queensland. Every two months, the Gold Coast Hospital sends a team of medical specialists (Orthopaedic surgeon, Ophthalmologist, Respiratory Physician, Physiotherapists and more!) to Cherbourg to provide the community with improved medical services.
Griffith medical students have the opportunity to accompany these doctors and participate in the consultations.
It is a fantastic opportunity to improve your awareness of Indigenous health issues, cultural awareness and gain valuable clinical and communication skills.
The trips involve a Thursday and Friday of your time with the following activities. The intinerary includes
Thursday:
- Drive to Cherbourg
- Tour of Community
- Hospital Tour
- Visit to the Rations Shed/Museum
- Meeting with Barambah Medical Staff
- Overnight stay in Murgon
Friday
- PBL Catchup Session
- Morning consultations
- Lunch with Doctors at Barambah Clinic
- Afternoon consultations
- Return home.
Please register your interest in attending these clinics with the Indigenous Health Officer, Walter Hipgrave. He may be contacted at indigenous@hope4health.org.au
